In 1964, Alphonse Faverey and Franky Luyten were drafted for the Dutch military service. During Andy's status was still recovering, the band was less good even more the guitar playing. Alphonse with his band, The Strangers had split for a moment till Andy got his place back. The band needed a replacement for Andy's part. Reggy recovered after 2 weeks, but Andy was 4 days in coma and his arm was broken. The presence of Alphonse Faverey began when Andy and Reggy had a car accident. Jane came back to the band plus the additional lead guitarist, Alphonse Faverey. Then they rebuilt the band to The Tielman Brothers (1963-1964). Franky also went to Germany and had been a part of The Tielmans until the middle of 1964. Rumours said, Luyten was married to the family member or a cousin. The Tielman Brothers, Imperial Recordings & Ariola (1960-1963) for the brothers plus Franky Luyten (rhythm guitar and vocals). Then there were The Timor Rhythm Brothers - The Four Tielman Brothers - The 4 T's formed in Breda (1957-1959) without Jane, just the brothers.Ĭontinued. December 1949, they performed in presiden Soekarno's palace, then they began to cover some hits and pop singles from the top major artists in 1950s, such as Elvis Presley, Arthur Smith, Bill Haley, Les Paul, and many more.Īt first, they named themselves as The Timor Rhythm Brothers (1945-1957): Andy as guitar and vocals Reggy as banjo, guitar, and vocals Ponthon in double bass, guitar, and vocals Loulou in drums and vocals Jane in vocals Herman as guitarist and manager of the band, and Flora Lorine Hess, the mother, for the presentation. Rock-It-Chain has band member lineups over the years, as well as a detailed discography. It grew very well, because of their dad, Herman Tielman, gave full-supporting moments and always caught on time. Bakker also points out how the output from bassist, Robby Latuperisa, was “plugged through Andy’s guitar signal” on the way to “all other Fender Bassman and Showman” amplifiers, in addition to the PA sound system.Cees Bakker reports that “another Tielman first” was their innovative use of dual Fender VI six-string basses, one with lighter gauge strings (Reggy) and the other (Robby) with heavier ones - furthermore, “thanks to their amp settings Reggy sounded like an octave below guitar and Robby like a real bass guitar, which is unique for a Fender VI.”.Even still, I can find no photos of Andy’s 10-string invention on the web.Ĭees Bakker’s attempt to replicate Andy Tielman’s 10-String Fender Jazzmaster At the time, Tielman tried to conceal his instrument’s headstock with a towel, but other bands would copy his invention. Tielman, therefore, doubled each string (except the highest and lowest ones) and tuned every string pair in octaves to enlarge the sound. Andy Tielman’s famous 10-string Fender Jazzmaster was a result of having switched from his original Gibson Les Paul (due to its weight) and finding the Fender sound too thin. How fascinating, for example, to discover that. Indo-Rock-Gallery‘s story of the Indonesian expatriate music scene in the Netherlands also details how Andy Tielman and his brothers pushed the “new rock music” forward in a number of ways. But check out this live performance of the band in flight, and you too might be floored by the realization that some of the most compelling rockabilly sounds came from a group of Indo-Dutch youngsters (many thanks to Tom Hutton for the tip) :Īndy Tielman and his brothers Reggy, Ponthon, and Loulou emigrated to the Netherlands in 1957 and got their first big gig at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair in the “Hawaiian Village” of the Dutch pavilion, where they stole the show (see live performance clip above) with their exuberant stage antics, according to Indo-Rock-Gallery. I suspect that many if not most Americans are unfamiliar (as I was) with The Tielman Brothers, a band of siblings from the Netherlands by way of Indonesia. Victor Uwaifo‘s double-neck “magic guitar” with 18 strings immediately brings to mind Andy Tielman and his 10-string guitar.
